Hastings

At the beginning of September our class – the 4 A -  was in England. The first 2 nights we spent in Hastings. We slept in the “Grand Hotel”, which was on the “Grand Lane” and from some rooms you could see the sea.

At the first day we arrived and had dinner in a Chinese restaurant called “Lotus”. On the next day we visited Hastings. We were on the beach, in an interesting Fishery museum, at East Hill and in the old town of Hastings.

The weather was wonderful! The sun was shining and sky was blue. For lunch we had fish and chips. After we had visited Hastings, we went back to our hotel. We had some free time and had to write into our diaries. For dinner we went to the Italian restaurant “Pasta Pasta”. The food at both restaurants was very good. We slept very well in our hotel and the breakfast was good, too. At the next morning we went to Tollesbury by bus. Our stay in Hastings was really cool.

Sailing

We went sailing in England, Tollesbury, on two days. We had to walk far, because of the low tide, to get to our boats.

The first day we learned a lot about the sailing equipment, how to use it and how to raise and get down the sails. It was sunny and warm and because of this it wasn´t too bad.

The second day though was cold and cloudy, so it wasn´t that much fun. The wind was one of the biggest problems, because we had no gloves and the waves were strong so our hands were freezing in the water. We often had to tack or jib our boat very fast and watch our heads for the boom at the same time. We sailed to an island and anchored there.

We had lunch on the island and played some games. After that we sailed back again and luckily the rain stopped and the sun came out. The whole trip was fun despite the coldness.

Archery

One day of our trip to Tollesburry we went for doing Archery.

We went to a big meadow and there we had two groups : the donkeys and the shreks. At first we had some tries to learn it a little bit, afterwards we had the first competition, which was called „making pancakes“: we had to shoot one arrow into the white, the yellow, the blue and into the red zone. But when your arrow got stuck in the black zone, you burnt the pancake and you didn’t get any points at all! Our group – the shreks -  had two pancakes and the other group had only one.

After this competition we had some cakes and drinks and then we had to shoot as well as we could by aiming into the middle of each target. Every ring counts some points: the inner ring - the yellow zone - counts ten or nine points, the red zone eight or seven points, and so on. We had three passes and one of our instructors counted the points. Finally the shreks won!

Dredging Benthos

When the high tide came in, we went out to the sea. The weather was very nice. We had been split up into three groups, because the "main" ship was too small for all of us.

Two groups went on the IRB – motorboats and the other group went on the "main" ship. Everybody on the "main" ship could drive the boat if they wanted.

When we saw on a monitor that the sea level was 7 meters deep, we lowered a net down to the sea floor. Then we drove 100 meters and pulled it back into the boat.

That wasn´t so easy because the net was full of sea animals, plants and stones. We had fished spider crabs, shore crabs, slipper limpets, oysters, brittle stars, sea squirts and tube worms, which we sorted out and put into buckets to bring them back to „our“ light vessel.

One other half day we watched and investigated the marine invertebrates, talked about their main characteristics and made some drawings to follow up this topic in Biology classes back at school.

Team building games and evening activities

At our project week in England, we played some games besides the main activities to improve our teamwork skills. The teams were chosen by our teachers and the staff on the light vessel.

Especially one morning we spent on different activities which required trust, team spirit, concentration and cooperation. But they were also fun and we had the chance to work in a relaxed atmosphere.

For example we had to transport all our team members through a giant web, without touching it. This game’s name was “Spider Web”. The other games were called “Escape”, “Blind Shepherd”, “Gutterball” and “Egg-Safety”. The names are closely related to what we had to do in the games. That means in “Escape” we were prisoners and had to escape from an island, in “Blind Shepherd” one of us was the shepherd who had to direct blind sheep into a fencing without using his/her voice and in “Gutterball” we were supposed to transport balls in gutters around obstacles. Egg-safety was a little bit different from the others, because every team had to construct a protection which was supposed to keep the egg from cracking when it had been thrown from the tower of the lightvessel.

Similar games we also played in the evening, after the main activities. But those were not so focused on team building and just for fun, like climbing, football and a night walk.

The Concert

On the last evening in Tollesbury there was a Concert where everyone had to do something. (e.g. act something; play the piano; sing, ...) There were many interesting ideas and everybody had a lot to laugh.

First Ariane, Melina, Fiona, Lena, Valerie and Flora sang ‘The Pizza Samba’. After that Johannes sang ‘Leomon Tree’ for us. Magdalena, Julia and Ricarda played ‘Simon says’ and Niko ‘beat boxed’. After that we had Clemens S. singing ‘Die Allianz’ for us and Clemens B. playing the piano. Benjamin told us a spooky story and Hans, Michael and Pascal performed a sketch.

Laura, Debby and Lara played little games which our instructors had to carry out, Marco put both his legs around his neck, Aise rapped and our teachers put a sketch on stage. And we were introduced to Esmeralda, who was easily scared by loud noises, resulting in Max getting wet.

This evening was great fun!
